Autumn 11 - Spring 12

This year, Splendid Productions are going to a dark place with a brand new adaptation of Medea by Euripides.
In Ancient Greece, the name of the monstrous murdering mother Medea was well- known. The story of Medea, the mysterious sorcerer-princess who helped Jason steal the famous Golden Fleece from her father, is a mythical romance with a terrible, terrible ending.
Splendid’s new creative adaptation puts the audience at the heart of the performance, as a twenty-first century chorus presents a timeless tale of passion, betrayal and revenge. While history paints Medea as a pitiless monster, we wonder if the truth can be so black and white. What does it take to drive a woman to murder her own children? Is there a small human story inside the mighty myth? And whose version of history should we believe?
In a series of inventive Brechtian episodes, Splendid’s powerful cast of three will show how an ancient story can resonate through time, and how the simplest of theatrical ideas can have a devastating impact.
Ideal as an in-school live performance, an example of creative adaptation, or a demonstration of practitioner-based theory in action. The 1-hour performance is available with a 90-minute or 4-hour workshop exploring either the production, Chorus & Ensemble, devising or specific practitioner techniques.
The one-hour performance is accompanied by a range of possible workshops including Medea & Greek Theatre session, Chorus & Ensemble or a Practitioner workshop. We offer 90-minute or 4-hr workshop sessions, or evening performances with optional post-show discussion.
A DVD of the production will be available for in early 2012 so that you can review the performance in detail.
The tour runs from 7 September 2011 to 23 March 2012, early booking is advised.
